I’m not one for conspiracy theories, but I recently watched a convincing documentary about the connection between crop circles and Mayan prophecies.
Regardless of who they are from, they are beautiful and whoever makes them rocks.

another brilliant film, The Skin I Live In by Pedro Almodovar.
I saw this as soon as I returned to the city from Thanksgiving although I should have gone straight to the library instead. It was so so so nice to see the family.

Today, I slept in a bit at my boyfriend’s house, went to class (where we talked about the amazing film “Yesterday” about a South African woman) and rehearsal and edited my thesis and term paper for South African Lit.

It’s very cold outside. This song is keeping me warm.

"In other words, because we are all interconnected, none of us
can be ‘without’ Winnie, or Sarah Baartman, or Penelope, or ourselves. And
to be our fullest selves, and have our ‘giftedness’ released, we have to accept
one another as part of ourselves. Instead of judging and rejecting one
another, women should actively, kindly, remove one another from the
banishment as aberration – a term and a place that we construct when we
refuse to care."

against all odds (a lot of things went wrong), this weekend was great. visited my BFF’s new apartment in Minneapolis, strolled through a few great exhibitions at the Walker, and saw four sets at the Dingus house, including the Sidekicks and Bomb the Music Industry! and even better, we ended up taking a midnight swim in the lake after the show.
pictured is the record BTMI! just released, VACATION. it is pretty!

Breaking News of the Day: The House today voted to approve an 11th-hour debt-ceiling deal aimed at staving off the first debt default in US history. The Senate is expected to approve the bill when it votes on it tomorrow.
Above: Rep. Gabrielle Giffords returned to the House today for the first time since the Tucson shooting in January. She cast her vote in favor of the bill.
Spending Cuts: According to the Congressional Budget Office, the Budget Control Act will cut spending by $2.4 trillion over ten years — $917 billion dollars in the first phase (only $63 billion saved through 2013) and an additional $1.5 trillion in cuts in the second phase based on the recommendations of a 12-member bipartisan congressional committee (nicknamed “Super Congress”) slated to meet later this year; a failure on the part of the committee to propose additional cuts will set off a last-resort “trigger” cutting $1.2 trillion in spending down the middle — 50% from defense, 50% from non-defense, with a few exceptions; pie chart: What Gets Cut If The Debt Commission Doesn’t Agree?
Debt Ceiling: The deal allows President Obama to raise the debt ceiling by about $900 billion, keeping America solvent through the end of 2012.
Balanced Budget Amendment: Both the House and Senate must vote on balanced budget amendment to send to states requiring two-third majority by December 31st; Ezra Klein: Could a balanced-budget amendment ever pass the states?
Criticism & Concerns: The deal does not address the Social Security tax cut and extended unemployment benefits — both set to expire this year; economists expressed concerns over the deal’s lack of economy-stimulating measures, forecasting that spending cuts coupled with the tax cut’s expiration would reduce growth by 1.5 percent and weaken an already fragile economy further; in addition, the deal may not be enough to avoid a downgrade from credit ratings agencies; other gripes from both left and right.
Sound Bites: VP Joe Biden: Tea Party Republicans “have acted like terrorists”; Congressional Black Caucus chairman Emanuel Cleaver: Debt deal “looks like a Satan sandwich”; House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi: “…with a side of Satan fries.”
Further Reading: Budget Control Act: Full Text; The debt-ceiling deal in one flowchart; Boehner’s Debt Ceiling Agreement Presentation; How the Tea Party Won the Deal; how the debt deal affects you.

A good rally of the current situation. yeah.

My best friend is moving away tomorrow and I’m making her a series of mixtapes to send her on her way to Minneapolis. I’m actually not much of a mix-maker— I always end up with a great list that’s way too hard to slim down. Or I am inclined to pick tracks the recipient has already heard a thousand times.
So this time around, I had the brilliant idea to stay within a category: current local music or Midwestern acts, musician friends of mine or acquaintances I’ve made. It’s music she’s never heard before AND it’s great, a mix featuring the likes of
Poison Control Center / Brooks Strause / Skye Carrasco / Kill County / the River Monks / Utopia Park / Mumfords / Pennyhawk / Derek Lambert and the Prairie Fires / Sleeping in the Aviary / New Madrid / Children of Spy
and at the end, a few “bonus” tracks which are just unpublished things I’ve made or friends have made. So whenever she misses me, or Iowa, she’ll have the sounds of the plains to groove to.
